Yeah, that was my experience. "Tails" indicates buffer DSP bypass circuit and true by-pass kills the circuit when off hence culling the noise. That is my peave with the unit so far, if you just "willy nilly" add effects you start building this huge noise floor, I noticed many are using the gate the cull the noise but their initial preset is just terrible in design. I tried out a Malmsteen preset someone had done and I noticed the gate was up front, which I find quite weird, clicked that off and man what a huge hiss fest that was. Serious over modulated levels causing digital clipping and everything bad. Hard to believe that is what someone came up with on the unit. Which all things considered made me like the unit more because it allows you to do really stupid things, a wide range of options.
I tweak my amp models to death trying to get the noise as low as possible and be more tonal and not buzzy. I found the loop works better switching to line level and then taking off 3db on the level which is the basic difference between line and pedal level signals. More experimenting trying to integrate my better pedals. I would much rather get my Wampler pedals going instead of most of the internals. A few are OK if you tweak them a lot most just too buzzy for my tastes. I spend more time working on the amp models and getting them really good. Pretty amazed at the results so far, my Blackface, Tweed, and ENGL are pretty worked out and I am pleased with the result on my rig. Effects are problematic but I can find a way around the internal OD/Gain effects by just using a gained up amp. The modulations, delay, reverbs, and some of the filter effects are pretty damn good.
Ordered that heavy duty
Mission EP1-L6 expression pedal, just FYI, Sweetwater has those on sale right now, $130 from like $180. Be nice to have more options on the expression controls.
I get what you are saying on the differing effects. Makes sense not one unit would excel at everything. Creating a "Munster Car" would be ideal but who would be the mad scientist who could create that mix. Boss is probably pretty good I just am past using their little pedals. I am digging the HD500 so far and my new rig design is working better than I had planned. The amp models sound like the real deal and good version of what they are intended to mimic. I love my tube amp rig but this is a nice change of pace and a lot of fun working on tones. I am waiting daily for my new phones to arrive so I can actually hear them better. Really hard to work on the high gain models w that impedance mismatch on the cans.
