Don't get me wrong: I love my dreadnoughts. Square shoulders, big full tone, crisp highs without being tinny. I've got dreads from Alvarez, Aria, Washburn, & even First Act.
But years ago I had the chance to try a rebuilt 1890s Washburn "lady's guitar," & ever since I've always wanted a miniature version.
Too many "half-size" or "beginner" or "travel" acoustics, however well-intentioned, are just crap. Some makers leave out bracing (not so mechanically necessary on a smaller-surface top), others put standard-size braces in the usual relative places. Usually, the poor thing ends up with worse tone than a cigar-box guitar, nothing but cardboard mid-high. Even a modern-era Martin
parlour I tried left me unimpressed.
Last year, I was excited to take a Washburn R for a whirl -- it even has the V neck profile of its ancestor.
So I was excited to trip over one of the
