Don't get me wrong: I love my dreadnoughts. Square shoulders, big full tone, crisp highs without being tinny. I've got dreads from Alvarez, Aria, Washburn, & even First Act.

But years ago I had the chance to try a rebuilt 1890s Washburn "lady's guitar," & ever since I've always wanted a miniature version.

Too many "half-size" or "beginner" or "travel" acoustics, however well-intentioned, are just crap. Some makers leave out bracing (not so mechanically necessary on a smaller-surface top), others put standard-size braces in the usual relative places. Usually, the poor thing ends up with worse tone than a cigar-box guitar, nothing but cardboard mid-high. Even a modern-era Martin parlour I tried left me unimpressed.

Last year, I was excited to take a Washburn R for a whirl -- it even has the V neck profile of its ancestor.

So I was excited to trip over one of the Luna attempts:

Deep cutaway, unique soundhole, piezo, quality woods all around, even a well-placed strap button -- at $400, I'm tempted.

The Taylor mini GS is $100 more than the Luna and I had the opportunity to try one out last month, and I was smitten. This little guitar plays wonderfully and sounds even better. My ears could not believe the depth and warm sound this smaller guitar put out. My hats off to Taylor.

If your thinking about buying a Luna guitar go ahead. I was looking for a used banger at Guitar Center while on holidays in August to supplement an nice Yamaha I set up for Nashville tuning, and I came across a beautiful what I thought was a spalt maple top Luna cut-away acoustic guitar. It looked great and to my surprise played and sounded almost as good as it appeared. It was under $200, and also came equipped with a fairly good piezo pick-up system. The only fault was the battery pack came loose after playing it for a few days. The top is really spruce and engraved to look like spalt maple, but of course engraving and pretty graphics are what Luna guitars are all about. I was telling my wife that when I started to play guitar 40+ years ago inexpensive were for the most past garbage today with modern manufacturing techniques it is really possible to buy a well-built, decent sounding instrument without breaking the bank. My hat goes off to Luna guitars. http://www.lunaguitars.c...sticproduct/gypspalt.php
