My Fender Rumble 100 (2-10) sounds great, but it's a bit of a chunk for my aging back to haul around.

While I remain totally in awe of the build quality of my Lopo Line 1x12 guitar cabs, I'm considering downsizing my bass gear.

I just pounced on a Behringer head (which I may get around to reviewing someday), which they rate at 450 watts. Nevertheless, I'm hoping to set this on a one-cone cab. Lopo only offers me 1-15, 2-12, or 4-10, starting at $246.80.

So I went digging around the Internet, & stumbled across Avatar Speakers:
http://www.avatarspeakers.com/

There, I found the SB112 cab. Front-ported, tweetered, Speakon, & dual 1/4" jacks. Made in USA, yet. Starting at $289.

What's impressive is that's the price loaded with an Eminence Delta LF, rated 500w.Woot

Not super-light at 46 lbs... but, geez, only $40 more for colored Tolex...Brick wall

I don't have any experience with the Avatar bass cabs, but their guitar cabs are really excellent. The two I've seen have been equal or better than the Lopo or AB Sound cabs that I've seen.

But I have no experience with the mentioned Eminence driver, and that may have more to do with your final mileage than the cab.

And is a 115 plus head really going to be lighter and easier to carry than the Rumble 100/210?

The official curb weight of the Rumble is like 65 lbs, so I'd not only be dropping 20 but getting the smaller form-factor.

While I really like what I see from the Avatar 12", I'm still holding out hope for a ported untweeted 10" box that can live comfortably in the house & maybe serve for low-volume guitar-club events. (There are good bass-rated 8" cones out there, but a couple of wonks say they just don't have the coil diameter or throw to be more than passable for bass guitar, so I've scratched that off the wish-list.)

Ya just knew it had to happen... Avatar Speakers is having a "post Christmas" inventory reduction. Nothing HUGE, but on their bass cabs that they normally cover in black fuzzy carpet (called "rat fur" by some -- love it) as the basic -- that'd be the B212, B410, B210, & SB112 -- they'll send out any they have with colored Tolex for the same price, normally a $40-$70 upcharge. Now I have a decision to make...

Decision made, but different. There was an Avatar B112 up on eBay, & I brought it down for $212 shipped. It's the immediate ancestor to the SB112, so doesn't have a Speakon jack (no biggie) but does have the padder for the tweeter. A few dings, a little hardware corrosion, a cracked ear on the tweeter. Looks like I may have the small-club rig I've wanted, something I can hoist into the car without excessive back strain. In a week or so, I may finally be able to demo my Behringer head!!

(Not so Frugal as I could wish, true... but realize I spent almost that much last month for various books & DVDs on Amazon!!)

To be honest Tony, I'm curious how the Behringer head is going to sound. So, keep us posted.

The cab arrived today, & really it looks pretty darned good to me.

In box, it was a bit hard to handle, but unwrapped I had no trouble at all lugging it upstairs -- those "towel bar" side handles are perfect for something this size.

Three days into the work-year & I'm already into the overtime, so I'm feeling a bit fried. I haven't fired up a bass amp in a couple of months, but maybe this weekend I'll find some time to give it a workout & possibly get some photos as well.

Yes yes YES did I finally test the Behringer (BX4500H) into the Avatar.

Summary -- ThumpUp

I wish the Avatar had the Speakon jack, just because it'd be my first rig thus.

Some reviews of the Behr gripe about the "noisy" fan. Now, it's true that this is supposed to be thermostatic, but mine winds up as soon as I turn on the amp. That said, it's quieter than most stock PC fans, & shifting around in my chair is louder. I don't see a problem.

The amp sounds lovely, & the speaker handles it without incident. Mind, that's at "sitting five feet from cone center" volume, so I have yet to wind it out properly. Also need to twiddle the tweeter knob to compare extremes...

All in all, though, I'm pleased with the setup for potential club work, without requiring that I trade the Alero for a minivan.

Spotted at GC online:

At $200, a bargain to be had!! If I had gigs &/or more storage space, I'd snag this in a heartbeat & run both cabs parallel, which would open up all 450w from the Behringer.

Barring that, I hope someone reading this gets it. If you've got a small combo bass with a speaker out, this might be the ideal upgrade path for you. Trust me: my Avatar cab kicks butt & looks good doing it.ThumpUp

For a few bucks more:

The 2-10 should give you richer mids without giving up overmuch thud, & I think any bassist would enjoy the padded (rear volume knob) tweeter, albeit at 60 lbs vs the SB112's 46 (those magnets add up fast!). Again, given space, pairing a 2-10 with a 1-15 would just totally rock -- & also be great for clean jazz lines.
