I've been a longtime fan of the Sans Amp, and then the Trademark 30 & 10 - so many good sounds from a little box.
But never played a TM 60. This weekend however, a friend and I were trolling pawnshops & used gear stores looking for a new semi-hollow for him when we stumbled upon a slightly rough TM 60 for cheap. We played it for a couple minutes then argued for quite a while over who would get to buy it. Since I already have an amp + 2 backups, and his #1 is a 35-year old Traynor with issues, he won.
$180 out the door with tax. Missing logo, a few tolex scratches, a missing rubber foot, and a moderate smoke smell. Knucklehead sales guy thought there was an issue with the amp because the Boost light would not go out (no footswitch). I did not educate him.
A condition of my surrender was that I could borrow the amp for this first weekend. Wow. I had no idea it would be this good. The flexibility and chameleon character was tremendous. I played an SX SSS Tele, Xav 500 with Crunchy Pats, and an old Epi Dot and found settings for each that could get good tones from any pickup position. Getting good tones from both neck & bridge pu's on the Xav & Epi without having to change the EQ is no small feat. (Both have huge, thick neck pu's.) The Bite switch was the revelation. And the Xav bridge pickup through the Marshall-ish Ch 2 setting was crazy good. I wanted to tell my bandmates that we are only playing Frampton and Gary Moore from now on.
I've probably heard better emulations of most of these tones before (a silverface Fender is still at being a silverface Fender than any emulation....), but I've never heard them from one box that was so easy to use and so...imaginatively configurable.
I was trying to A-B compare it with my Line 6 AX2, and I think that the TM 60 was more organic sounding, with more pick & volume knob sensitivity, and more sponginess on Ch 2. And much easier to find pinch harmonics on both channels. The AX2's emulations were better in some cases (59 Bassman tone is just special...), but some don't clean up very well with the vol knob. And some stuff - like the Bite, Weep, Punch, & Growl - is very hard to find and dial in on the AX2.
All in all, I'm very jealous that I'm not the new owner. I'll have to go find my own now. Thanks for turning me on to this beast.
