Thanks for the additions?

Do you happen to have any links supporting these? Since I've posted the article I've been challenged a couple times have provided sources as such. Prior to adding any more to the article would like to be sure I can back up my words...

Sorry, Will - I don't have the exact links, but all references are from interviews in Guitar Player magazine (I don't know the exact issues offhand, but I own them) except for the following:

Duke Robillard - might have been mentioned in Vintage Guitar magazine interview. I personally saw Robillard both solo and with the Fabulous Thunderbirds when he used the Peavey PA head.

Larry Coryell - plays the Kmd amp in his instructional video.

Nils Lofgren - used a brown Acoustic Control combo amp when he was guest guitarist with the Pretenders during their first (2) US tours. Lofgren was good friends w/the late James Honeyman-Scott.

OK tried to confirm some of the names.

Bill Nelson - I believe the Carlsbro amp he used was a tube driven PA head. not sure about the limited edition custom amp they built for him. They don't list the specs for it.

David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) - Found several claims of seeing him use one live and he's listed on the Tech 21 site as a user. Good enough for me!

Nori Bucci - Yep. She uses the Jazzmaster Ultralight. Per Guitar Player interview, claims she loves it for its portability and great tone.

Duke Robillard - Couldn't find anything on the Peavey, he is currently using a Louis Electric tube combo.

Alan Holdsworth - He was indeed a Yahmaha endorse and used the DG series. However, I purposely omitted digital amps from the list. Ty Tabor also used the Yahmaha DG series for a short time.

Larry Coryell & Ritchie Sambora - KMD built both solid state and tube amps and I can't find any info as to which they used. In general, those amps have an infamous reputation for sounding bad, tube or solid state.

Nils Lofgren - I couldn't even find anything about him playing with the Pretenders!

I also added Dweezil Zappa to the list due to his usage of the Peavey Wiggy.

Greg Ginn- Roland SIP-300 preamp / QSC power amp through various 4x12 cabs during the Black Flag years, he currently uses some type of Sansamp (as you noted).

Personally, I think the JC-120 is evidence that all solid state guitar amplifiers over 15 watts should be banned under the Geneva Convention!

Oh, don't break my heart! I loved my old JC-120's clean tones. Granted, I could never wrangle a decent od out of it and I tried a ton of pedals...

I'd love to try break my frugal sensibilities and take a Pritchard for a spin some time...

I know this probably will sound sacrilegious, but I hate Marshalls. Never been able to get a good sound out of them. Have played probably over 3 dozen over the past 30 years. Only found one that I liked. My band, Nekron 99, got on MTV in the 1980's and our EP got distribution in 8 countries. I cut the EP with a Music Man HD210 but played practically all of band's gigs with either a Yamaha G30-112 or a Peavey Bandit 65. If I'm playing very heavy rock, I'll take Hughes & Kettner, Orange or Peavey any day over Marshalls.

Love what you're doing here Will; your outlook on maximizing bang for the buck when buying gear mirrors my own philosophy.

I love me a good cranked Marshall crunch. Not perfect for everything but nothing else sounds quite the same. Granted, cranking a Marshall in a bedroom will certainly shake the windows and have your family screaming at you! I've never tried any H&K stuff but I hear you on Orange and Peavey amps. Love them too. Thanks for the success story using ss amps!

Okay, I'm a fan of JohnSS -- anyone who can mention Kaukonen, Nelson, & Holdsworth in the same post has clearly turned away from the herd.

I too have had terrible luck at getting tube amps to sound right for me, & I envy guitarists that make 'em sound like choirs of angels. But I'm vaguely shopping for a combo-size tube amp, so who knows.

As a longtime Bill Nelson fan, I asked a couple weeks ago on his forum site about the status of Carlsbro. Only two units of the "Nelsonic" model exist. BN said:
Quote:
It's a big. heavy, retro-futurist styled amp. Its technical innards are based on the Carlsbro 50 Top Evolution valve model but its physical/cosmetic design is all my own and unique.

You can see it: http://www.carlsbro-online.co.u...rlsbroWeb/billnelson.php

I can find only tube/valve amps from Carlsbro, though they may've had such models in the past.

I remember the Kaukonen interview in Guitar Player like 1975 -- yeah, I'm that old -- & he had mixed feelings about his Orange, so he's at least omnivorous. I saw him onstage five years ago (Hot Tuna), & I was more into the tunage than gear-watching, so I can' tell ya what was there. (Though I noted Jack wasn't playing one of his signature models.)

Nowadays, the "tube vs transistor" thing has gotten VERY cloudy. I've got an overdrive pedal with a 12AX7 tube in it. My pocket-size Zoom Studio has some simulators that do a surprisingly good job at the characteristics of tube "crunch." And then there's that whole wild rumpus that Line 6 started!

Thanks for the props, Tony!

I'm a longtime Jorma fan. His use of the GK250 was referenced in a late 1980's Guitar Player issue. The reason why I remembered this so clearly was that I produced a record for a French bank called Laser in 1988 and I wound up using the GK250 for overdubs, since it was easy to record, having both the direct out along with a Sennheiser 441 close and an AKG 414 distant. Since the speakers are only 6" each, I was skeptical about their sound, but I was willing to give the amp a try after reading that Jorma was using one.

I am a contributor to www.guitargearheads.com, and previously interviewed Dave Boonshoft of Aguilar, who created the customized Jack Casady signature speaker cabinet. Just as the GK250 is a tiny package with lots of bang for the buck, the JC is an incredibly loud and pure sounding cab in a relatively small package.

I played a gig this past Friday using a Behringer GX110 that sounded pretty good, though perhaps I should have cranked it a tad more to cut better. Some of the songs will be posted on YouTube in the upcoming week. I was originally going to use by Dano CO-1, but the Behringer sounded great plugged straight in.
